Dong Hoi
NOTE:
Mine & Other peoples hints & suggestions (mainly from LP Thorn tree)
that I have collated can be found either HERE
(PDF from 2002) or HERE (PDF's from 2003) Many kind
thanks to those that answered mine or others queries
. There is all sorts of possibly USEFUL info there that will be repetitive if
I keep putting it in each page.
An excellent place, beautiful, unspoiled and bristling with tourist potential.
We spent a day & nite there only but wished I spent another cupple. The river trip to the cave was skipped in preference to hiring a motorbike to check the town out and see a bit of the place. We caught a ferryboat across the river and rode about 15kms to the south. The dunes are full of cemetaries (prolly drowned fishermen) and would make an excellent location for a Viet western.
The
Mau Hong Hotel View from Front Room
We stayed at the Mau Hong (052 821804), a great
family run place (we were 1 of 2 customers :P staying) with a 1st floor dual
fan huge room (tv, minibar etc) at 10$ per nite. The big front window looked
out over the fishermans landing wharf and down-river to the sea. The big side
windows looked up-river to the town so the views are awesome.
We had lunch @ the floating restaurant which was nice. Dinner we had at a place out on the northern beach road about 4km from town. 3 lobsters, 2 crabs and lots of beer cost 90000VND. Being virtually the only customers meant we were well looked after .... the owners 2 good looking daughters hand shelled the seafood for us and put bite sized portions on our plates ... awesome :>
It is a good place to go if you can work it out yourself but it may be a little daunting for 1st timers without outbound transport.
The beaches are great, the river scenic, food excellent and ppl friendly.
